Matua (Elders)

Matua (Elders)
Te Reo Maori (English)

In Te Reo Māori, 'matua' can also refer to a chief or person of importance.

The elders in our community are vital to who we are and what we become, shaping and leading the path forward. They carry the wisdom, knowledge, and experiences that built the world around us, climbing many mountains and conquering a wealth of challenges.

Sadly, our elders are often isolated and disconnected from the community. The reality for a lot of our older community is that leaving the house and engaging with others outside of the family can be rare occurrences. Muslim Wellbeing Ōtautahi is hoping to change this, by creating opportunities to hear the stories of our elders and organising events that allow our elders to be connected.
